The Cobra has been wowing muscle car enthusiasts since Ford first came out with the barely street legal muscle car! The Cobra line is known in the muscle car industry for being the top performance Mustang and the Cobra R takes this legacy one step further by changing up the basic design of the Ford pony car to help it reach its full potential.
These cars were built for racing and in 1993 and 1995, the vehicles were only sold to those buyers with valid race licenses as insurance that the Cobra would actually be driven and not simply collected.
The Cobra, which was built on the SN95 platform became the only vehicle in the Cobra line to be made available to the general consumer market.
A special edition team for the Cobra
A special-edition vehicle needs a special team to put it together and for the build of the ultimate Mustang, Ford's Speci al Vehicle Team (SVT)) brought in the Mustang tuner legend, Jack Roush and made use of components from aftermarket manufacturers like Borla and BF Goodrich.
The overall vehicle performance value of the Cobra was always designed to be extremely competitive and considering it could still measure up favorably with the sports cars today makes the used vehicle prices for this particular model very high.
What makes the 2000 stand out?
The designers and engineers of the 2000 Ford Mustang Cobra R made sure that every single component that went into the machine was, one, necessary and, two, powerful.
How did they do this? Ford's SVT managed to take the 5.4L engine and fit in with dual overhead cam heads as well as redesigned pistons. The design was so innovative that it was later featured on the Ford GT.
The effect of the redesign? Modest output measured at 385 brake HP with 385lb-ft. Torque but independent testing showed that actual out put could be rated higher. The lower engine mounts required a taller hood to accommodate the powerhouse engine.
The Cobra's power extends to the rear wheels via the same six-speed manual shift found in the Dodge Viper. Early models of the Cobra featured the same fully independent suspension that was shown on the 2000 model Cobra but with the added stiff spring components that lowered the height of the ride by 1.5 inches. This, in addition to the specially-designed g-Force KD tires ensures a powerful ride.
To make it more aerodynamic (because who doesn't love a car that can fly? Just kidding.) a removable front air splitter was added which the manufacturer recommends to be used only when displaying the Cobra or during an actual race as it is too low to be considered street-legal. The splitter helps the Cobra go up to 175mph and takes it from 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds.
So how does it measure up to the competition?
When a car is built for r acing, you don't really expect it to drive well on public streets, but despite already measuring up favorably to the C5 Corvette during a racing road test conducted on both straight and traditional racetracks when it was first released, the 2000 Ford Mustang Cobra is also a smooth, street-legal ride.
If you can ignore the fact that it doesn't have air conditioning and can only seat two people, it's pretty darn perfect and a shoe-in for a nomination to the classic car Hall of Fame.
Only 300 units of the 2000 Ford Mustang Cobra R's were produced and sold. A used special-edition vehicle now retails from $50,000 to $75,000. Good luck finding one, though.
