The other day, I was at Starbucks and someone trolled up in a brand-new car. It was a car made in South Korea, but it was extremely nice, elegant, and had I not seen the emblem, I would've sworn it was a Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, or some other luxury car. When I complemented the gentleman about his car, we started talking. He told me when he bought it at the dealership that it had 55 miles on it. I thought that was a lot, but then again it was a pretty nice car, and I'm sure everyone at the dealership wanted to test drive it, or one of the sales managers wanted to take it home a few nights. That happens more than you know in the auto industry. Okay so let's talk shall we?
How many miles should it legitimately have on it? Well consider this, when the car is done at the factory it is pulled into a parking lot. From there it is driven onto a train, or p ut on a truck and taken to the ship to be transported across the ocean. Once the ship gets to the US sport, the company hires a contractor with lots of drivers to drive each one of those cars off the ship into a giant car lot, often a couple miles square. That means the car could then have two more miles on it. So far that makes perhaps four miles. Next, the car is put onto a train, but has to drive out of the parking lot and onto the train. You could then add another one to 2 miles.
Once the train gets to its depot the car is driven off the train and put onto a truck. That might take 1/2 mile more in driving. Then the truck drives it to a car dealership lot, usually only a few hundred yards from where it is parked at the dealership, or driven in back to get a "dealer prep" as this is where all of the stickers are taken off the car, and all the plastic wrap that was used to protect it. It is then driven from the detail shop behind the dealership to the front car lot. S o you could probably add almost another mile there. This is why cars have anywhere from 4 to 8 miles on them when you buy them.
Then there are cars which are used for test drives, for people who are looking to buy a car. So car might have another 4 or 5 miles there. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.
